Health Insurance and Obamacare

The most significant of the Obamacare changes are soon to take place. Open enrollment for the government-assisted plans begins 10/1/13, with many of the plans and significant changes effective 1/1/2014. With the Federal changes in healthcare, people are rightfully confused as to what they should do to carry the proper coverage and receive the best rates. Guaranteed Issue is among the most significant changes. Those who could not obtain insurance for pre-existing conditions will no longer be denied an offer of coverage. Although hotly debated, the effect on overall premiums will not be known for some time. For employers, the changes are perhaps even more confusing. One of the more surprising twists is that by offering coverage, in some cases you could be doing a disservice to your employees. By offering coverage to your employees, you could make them ineligible for the government subsidies. These subsidies are available for families earning up to 400% of the national poverty level. The subsidies can be as high as 80% of the premium! If your employees contribute to a business’ group plan, it is highly possible that it could cost them more than an individual plan with the government subsidies. As a result, we are expecting to see a large gain in individual plans and an overall reduction in group plans. Most of our current policies are on a month-to-month basis, so you are not committed long-term. You are able to get the coverage you need and cancel at any time. Give us a call and we will advise you as to your individual situation. Click here for Anthem Blue Cross Quote
